Meet Linda Blackelk

Residing in Carson City, Nevada, for 24 years, I have always been deeply connected to my Lakota family members, a bond that fuels my passion for jewelry design and production. This journey began 35 years ago in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where I crafted unique pieces for myself and my family, incorporating semi-precious stones and silver accents. Inspired by my relative, a talented artist who first used the name B.E.A.D (Black Elk Art Design), I embraced the title as the "other B.E.A.D," which became the foundation of my business. Throughout the years, I have honed my skills, particularly mastering techniques like the peyote stitch, creating intricate, meaningful jewelry that reflects my artistic vision. Each piece I make is not just an accessory but a representation of my personal journey.

In my jewelry making, I employ two primary techniques that not only enhance the beauty of my creations but also connect them to rich cultural histories. The first is the peyote stitch, which I use to encircle each stone. This fundamental beading technique has deep roots, particularly within Native American cultures, where it was integral to creating ceremonial objects and intricate beadwork. Its name comes from its traditional association with decorating gourds tied to the peyote religion. The second technique I utilize is hand-knotting with silk for the stones in my necklaces. This practice also boasts a profound history, with origins tracing back to ancient civilizations such as Egypt and Mesopotamia. Together, these techniques infuse my jewelry with both aesthetic appeal and a sense of historical significance, allowing each piece to tell a story that transcends time.
